Investment Management

Your portfolio has a job to do. A customized investment strategy helps it do that job well.

Investment decisions should support your broader financial plan, not exist separately from it. As an independent, fee-only fiduciary firm, AimWell provides customized investment management for clients in St. Petersburg, throughout Tampa Bay, and across the country. Each portfolio is built around the client's goals, time horizon, growth and cash-flow needs, tax considerations, and tolerance for risk.

What an investment strategy does.

An investment strategy is not designed to react to every market movement or predict short-term outcomes. It provides a disciplined, long-term framework for balancing growth, income, risk, liquidity, and tax efficiency within your broader financial plan.

At AimWell Financial, each investment strategy is customized around your goals, time horizon, cash-flow needs, tax considerations, and tolerance for risk. A comprehensive investment strategy may include:

  • Evidence-based portfolio construction grounded in long-term research
  • Diversification and asset allocation aligned with your goals and time horizon
  • Tax-efficient investment management designed to preserve more of your returns
  • Risk management based on both your tolerance for risk and your financial capacity to take it
  • Ongoing portfolio monitoring and rebalancing as markets and your circumstances change

Together, these elements create a portfolio designed to support the work your money needs to do over time.

Evidence-based investing and disciplined portfolio construction.

AimWell's investment philosophy is grounded in long-term research rather than speculation, market predictions, or short-term performance chasing. Portfolios are constructed using a disciplined process designed to capture long-term growth while managing the risks that could interfere with the broader financial plan.

Diversification is central to that process. Rather than concentrating risk in a narrow group of securities, sectors, or markets, portfolios are designed to spread exposure across different areas of the global market.

This typically includes:

  • Diversification across asset classes, geographies, sectors, and investment styles
  • Asset allocation aligned with your goals, time horizon, cash-flow needs, and tolerance for risk
  • Periodic rebalancing as markets, your circumstances, and the financial plan change
  • Ongoing portfolio monitoring to confirm that the strategy continues to serve its intended purpose

The goal is not to eliminate volatility or predict what markets will do next. It is to build a resilient portfolio that can remain disciplined through changing market conditions while continuing to support long-term financial goals.

Tax efficiency as a core part of investment strategy.

Investment returns matter, but so does how much of those returns you ultimately keep. AimWell incorporates tax considerations into portfolio construction and ongoing investment management rather than treating taxes as a separate, year-end concern.

Tax-aware investing may include:

  • Coordinating investments across taxable, tax-deferred, and tax-free accounts
  • Placing investments in the account types where they may be held more tax-efficiently
  • Managing capital gains exposure and identifying tax-loss harvesting opportunities when appropriate
  • Considering the tax consequences of rebalancing, withdrawals, charitable giving, and other portfolio decisions
  • Evaluating tax-efficient investment vehicles and strategies within the broader financial plan

Tax considerations should not drive every investment decision, but ignoring them can create unnecessary costs. AimWell coordinates investment management with tax planning so the portfolio supports both long-term performance and the client's broader financial goals.

Performance matters. So does staying disciplined.

Investment performance matters, but short-term returns do not tell the whole story. Results should be evaluated against the portfolio's goals, risk level, time horizon, cash-flow needs, tax considerations, and role within the broader financial plan.

AimWell uses evidence-based investing, diversification, disciplined asset allocation, ongoing monitoring, and periodic rebalancing to help portfolios remain aligned through different market environments. Rather than reacting to every forecast or short-term market movement, we evaluate whether the investment strategy continues to do the job it was designed to do.

Long-term discipline does not mean ignoring meaningful changes. It means responding thoughtfully when the financial plan, investment assumptions, or client's circumstances warrant action, rather than allowing temporary market noise to dictate the strategy.

The role of behavioral discipline in investing.

Successful investing requires more than a well-constructed portfolio. Fear, overconfidence, recent market performance, and the constant pressure to act can lead investors away from a sound long-term strategy.

AimWell helps clients recognize when an investment decision may be driven by short-term emotion rather than a meaningful change in their financial plan. Chris Manzione, AimWell's behavioral finance specialist, works with the broader team to help clients understand the habits, experiences, and reactions that may influence how they respond to market uncertainty.

The goal is not to eliminate emotion from investing. It is to understand what those reactions may be telling us, evaluate them alongside the financial facts, and make thoughtful decisions without allowing temporary market conditions to take control of the portfolio.

Aligning investments with personal values.

For some clients, investment decisions reflect personal values as well as financial goals. AimWell can incorporate preferences related to sustainability, social responsibility, industries, business practices, or other areas of personal importance while maintaining a disciplined investment approach.

Values-aligned investing may include:

  • Limiting or excluding exposure to specific industries, companies, or business activities
  • Seeking investments that reflect environmental, social, governance, or other personal priorities
  • Evaluating the diversification, risk, cost, tax, and performance implications of investment restrictions
  • Coordinating the investment strategy with charitable giving and broader financial-planning goals

Not every preference can be implemented without tradeoffs. AimWell helps clients understand how values-based investment choices may affect diversification, fees, taxes, risk, and expected performance before deciding how those preferences should be reflected in the portfolio.

Investment strategy guided by the AimWell team.

This structure combines AimWell's personalized financial planning and direct client relationship with the investment research, portfolio-construction expertise, and broader resources available through RFG Advisory. AimWell remains responsible for understanding each client's priorities and determining how the investment strategy should support the broader financial plan.

Who benefits from a structured investment strategy.

A disciplined investment strategy can support individuals and families through many stages of life. It may be especially valuable for:

  • Individuals building and preserving long-term wealth
  • Families planning for financial security across generations
  • Professionals managing equity compensation, concentrated investments, or growing financial complexity
  • People preparing for retirement or creating income from their portfolios
  • Business owners coordinating personal wealth with business interests
  • Families navigating an inheritance, business sale, divorce, or other major financial transition
  • Investors who want to incorporate charitable goals or personal values into their portfolios

In each case, the investment strategy should reflect the portfolio's purpose, time horizon, cash-flow needs, tax considerations, and role within the broader financial plan.

Questions people often ask.

How does Amy Powell guide investment strategy for clients?

Amy Powell, CFA®, leads AimWell's investment-management strategy and works directly with clients to understand their goals, time horizon, cash-flow needs, tax considerations, risk tolerance, and broader financial plan.

Drawing on more than 20 years in financial services, including more than a decade in investment research, Amy helps determine what each portfolio needs to accomplish. She then guides the development of a customized strategy using evidence-based portfolio construction, diversification, disciplined asset allocation, tax-aware investing, and ongoing portfolio management.

Amy remains involved as clients' circumstances and priorities change, helping ensure the investment strategy continues to support the work the money needs to do.

How does AimWell determine the right level of investment risk?

Risk tolerance is only one part of the decision. AimWell also considers your time horizon, cash-flow needs, financial resources, investment experience, emotional response to market volatility, and how much risk the plan actually requires.

Someone may be comfortable taking substantial investment risk but have no financial need to do so. Another person may feel cautious but still need enough long-term growth to address inflation, longevity, and future spending. AimWell helps balance your willingness, ability, and need to take risk within the broader financial plan.

What role does diversification play in a portfolio?

Diversification helps reduce the risk that one investment, company, industry, or market will have an outsized effect on the entire portfolio. A diversified portfolio may spread exposure across asset classes, sectors, geographies, company sizes, and investment styles.

Diversification cannot eliminate market risk or prevent losses, but it can help manage concentration risk and create a more resilient portfolio across different market environments. AimWell considers diversification within the context of each client's goals, time horizon, cash-flow needs, taxes, risk tolerance, and broader financial plan.

Why is tax efficiency important in investing?

Taxes can materially affect how much of an investment return you ultimately keep. Capital gains, dividends, interest income, portfolio turnover, account type, and the timing of withdrawals can all influence after-tax results.

AimWell incorporates tax considerations into portfolio construction and ongoing investment management. That may include coordinating investments across taxable, tax-deferred, and tax-free accounts, managing capital gains exposure, considering tax-loss harvesting when appropriate, and evaluating the tax consequences of rebalancing or withdrawals.

Tax efficiency should not override sound investment decisions. The goal is to coordinate investment management with the broader financial and tax plan so unnecessary taxes do not quietly reduce long-term results.

How often are investment strategies reviewed?

Investment strategies are monitored on an ongoing basis and reviewed through regular planning conversations. AimWell considers whether the portfolio remains aligned with the client's goals, time horizon, cash-flow needs, tax situation, risk tolerance, and broader financial plan.

A review also may be appropriate when circumstances change, such as retirement, a career transition, an inheritance, a business sale, a major withdrawal, or a change in family responsibilities. Market movement alone does not necessarily require action, but it may create a reason to rebalance, manage taxes, or confirm that the current level of risk remains appropriate.

The goal is not to change the portfolio simply because markets have changed. It is to make thoughtful adjustments when the financial plan, investment assumptions, or client's circumstances warrant them.

How does behavioral discipline affect investing?

Behavioral discipline helps investors avoid allowing fear, overconfidence, recent performance, or the pressure to act to derail a sound long-term investment strategy.

Market declines can create an urge to sell, while strong performance can encourage investors to chase returns or take more risk than the financial plan supports. AimWell helps clients recognize when those reactions may be influencing a decision, understand what the concern may be revealing, and evaluate it alongside the financial facts.

Chris Manzione, AimWell's behavioral finance specialist, and the broader team help clients stay grounded in the portfolio's purpose while remaining open to changes that are genuinely warranted. The goal is not to ignore emotion or remain invested regardless of circumstances. It is to make thoughtful decisions based on the financial plan rather than temporary market pressure.

Can investments reflect my personal values?

Yes. AimWell can customize an investment strategy to reflect preferences related to industries, business practices, sustainability, social responsibility, charitable priorities, or other issues that matter to you.

Values-aligned investing may involve limiting certain exposures or seeking investments that better reflect your priorities. These choices can affect diversification, fees, taxes, risk, and expected performance, so we help you understand the tradeoffs before incorporating them into the portfolio.

The goal is to reflect your values while maintaining a disciplined investment strategy designed to support your broader financial plan.

How involved will I be in the decision-making process?

Very involved. You remain in control of your financial decisions and investment strategy. AimWell's role is to explain the options, evaluate the tradeoffs, make recommendations, and help you understand how each choice may affect your broader financial plan.

Some clients want to understand every detail, while others prefer to focus on the decisions that matter most and rely on the team to manage the implementation. We adapt the process to the level of involvement you prefer while keeping you informed about meaningful changes.

The goal is a collaborative relationship in which you understand what the portfolio is designed to accomplish and feel comfortable with the strategy being carried forward.

Where are my investment accounts held?

Client assets are held with established independent custodians, including Charles Schwab and Fidelity. AimWell provides investment advice and portfolio management, while the custodian holds the assets, produces account statements, and provides direct account access.

This structure helps preserve transparency and keeps custody of client assets separate from the financial advisor providing the advice.

Do I need a large portfolio to benefit from investment planning?

Not necessarily. A disciplined investment strategy can be valuable whenever your portfolio plays an important role in your broader financial plan. The need for professional investment management may depend not only on portfolio size, but also on complexity, taxes, concentrated investments, equity compensation, retirement income needs, business ownership, inherited assets, and the level of ongoing guidance you want.

AimWell is generally best suited for clients who value a coordinated relationship in which investment management works alongside financial planning, retirement planning, tax planning, and estate and legacy planning.

The question is not simply whether your portfolio is "large enough." It is whether your financial situation and the support you want are a good fit for AimWell's services.

Can an investment strategy help reduce financial stress?

Yes. A well-designed investment strategy can reduce stress by giving the portfolio a clear purpose and providing a disciplined framework for making decisions when markets are uncertain.

AimWell helps clients understand how their investments support cash-flow needs, retirement, taxes, family priorities, and the broader financial plan. Knowing why the portfolio is structured a certain way can make short-term market movements feel less like a demand for immediate action.

An investment strategy cannot eliminate uncertainty or prevent market declines. It can provide greater clarity, reduce reactive decision-making, and give you a team to call when questions or concerns arise, rather than leaving you to interpret every headline and market movement on your own.

How does Rick Wedell support the investment strategy?

Rick Wedell, partner and chief investment officer of RFG Advisory, leads RFG's Investment Team. He has led the team since joining RFG in 2016 and brings 12 years of prior experience at Bain Capital Credit.

Through AimWell's relationship with RFG Advisory, Rick and the Investment Team provide investment research, asset-allocation guidance, portfolio-construction expertise, and ongoing portfolio-management support. Their work gives AimWell access to broader investment resources while Amy Powell and the AimWell team remain responsible for understanding each client's goals and ensuring the portfolio supports the broader financial plan.

Is your portfolio doing what you actually need it to do?

Your portfolio should be designed around what your money needs to accomplish, not short-term market predictions or a generic model. AimWell provides customized investment management that brings together your goals, time horizon, cash-flow needs, taxes, risk tolerance, and broader financial plan.

Tell us what you are working toward and what questions you have about your current portfolio. We'll explain how AimWell approaches investment management and determine together whether the relationship feels like the right fit.
